Proprietor Michael Bennetts has noticed an increase in hamping popularity - “Members of the camping community see others in hammocks, and out of curiosity, ask questions - once they’re convinced a hammock is a more suitable product for the environment they’re in, they’ll invest,” Michael says. “A hammock really comes into it’s own in terrain where there's hardly any flat ground and you can have a comfy sleep where it’s almost impossible otherwise. Of course, you do require hanging points, whether it’s a tree or a rocky outcrop, and the problem in New Zealand is, there are often plenty of trees, but too much undergrowth in between.” Michael continues, "Regarding insulation, sleeping mats are designed for flat ground – in a hammock it’s like putting an inflated Therm-a-Rest into a bathtub, it’s not gonna work unless it’s deflated around 50%, which results in cold-spots”.
Michael’s background is wilderness guiding, having begun his outdoor venturing field-testing tents for 'Camp Trails’ from the States, when driving a motor-bike 18,000 miles overland from Europe to Asia, with over 300 nights sleeping on hard ground, then settling in the South Island and testing sleeping-bags for ‘MacPac’ while ski-mountaineering the Southern Alps.
Skiing was his passion, working as a ski-patroller at Porter Heights, then avalanche-forecasting and heli-ski guiding with Alpine Helicopters. During the summer months, Michael was safety manager for the largest white-water rafting operation in the South Island based out of Queenstown, which included multi-day rafting ventures. He was a founding member of the whitewater rafting technical safety committee, working alongside the NZ Maritime Dept to establish safety rules and regulations, and also a swift-water rescue technician and instructor training river guides in B.C. Canada, Nepal and Norway. After 20yrs of wilderness guiding Michael’s safety record is unblemished.
Michael’s focus has always been on customer safety and comfort, and with his extensive wilderness experience he has the ability to select the best hammock camping gear available today. His passion is enjoying nature with a small foot-print, and today he enjoys ‘luxury camping', living close to nature onboard his classic yacht on Auckland’s harbour. “I’m familiar with design and development, so it’s easy to gauge quality and function for dependability in the outdoors.
